University of Florida's Fred Burkey
Spoke to Us on Water Conservation

May 17, 2008, brought "Farmer" Fred back to Tropical Ranch Botanical Gardens to do a special request lecture on Rain Barrels. The Martin County Extension Office has been hosting classes on conserving water by use of a rain barrel and it appears that many people are interested in helping the environment in this manner.

As of this date, the Extension Office has 184 barrels in the area for a saving of 6600 gallons of water, per barrel, per year during normal rain fall.

Multi-County Agent, Fred Burkey, of the University of Florida.

Burkey talked about the need for water restrictions and conservation to preserve this "finite" resource.

Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Pat Bonis describes how to make a rain barrel.

People who attended the lecture, were able to sign up to receive a rain barrel in the next week or two. The barrels are very difficult to come by as they must be food quality and most people are recognizing the benefits of having a rain barrel... or two... or four.

Claire Panella took home this beautiful Coleus plant as our first raffle winner.

Betty Carr, a soon-to-be Martin County Master Gardener was innediately put to work giving handouts to the audience. She also was a winner for her work

Hope Bougourd was tracked down in her car with her son, Ray, for this picture. Hope has a pretty little Sedum plant.

Jim Haines is shown here with a beautiful Lotus Flower amazing, FTN Assistant, Pat Bonis. Yes, it is real.
